The ds gaming system has seen a plethora of the detective/mystery genre games released in the past few years, and that is definitely not a bad thing. Some of the more notable ds games include Trace Memory, Hotel Dusk: Room 215, and the Phoenix Wright series.
The original ds game Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney has spawned three sequels and one spinoff (not yet currently released). In Phoenix Wright you play the role of defense attorney and take on cases where your client is (usually) innocent and where you are almost always the underdog. Add in anime inspired artwork and a mind blowing story; there isn’t much surprise why the franchise has been such a hit. Each section of the game begins with a “detective” approach to the game play. The game plays almost like old point and click adventure games where you go around different locations questioning bystanders for clues. Occasionally people won’t talk, and it’s up to you to find out different ways to squeeze information out of reluctant witnesses. This is usually done by using some sort of special technique, something that lets you know the person is lying. In the first few games you are in possession of a stone that lets you see the “locks” in your witnesses’ minds. The latest game gives you a ring that vibrates when your witness makes micro gestures. After detective work, the game turns into a courtroom simulator where you must defend your client from a guilty verdict, at all costs. This is where the game gets interesting. You must listen to witnesses’ testimonies and object to their contradictions. You can actually see the expressions on the witnesses change when you catch them lying, it’s very satisfying.
